Saturday and Sunday cruises are packed with domestic tourists. Weekday departures (Mon–Thu) are quieter and the photos are better.
Book a 2-day-1-night cruise minimum. Day trips spend more time in the bus than on the boat.
Lan Ha Bay (next to Halong) is a quieter alternative with the same karst scenery. Cát Bà Island is the gateway.
