Tachinomi means 'standing bar' — small, cheap, social spots where locals stop for one or two drinks after work.
Often hidden in shotengai (covered shopping streets) and alleys near major stations. Look for the red lanterns (akachochin).
Menus are usually only in Japanese. Point at what others are drinking, smile, and you'll be welcomed.
