Wai, don't shake hands

The 'wai' (palms together, slight bow) is the Thai greeting. Initiated by the younger or lower-status person.

Don't wai children, servants, or staff first — they wai you. As a foreigner, a small wai back is polite.

The higher your hands (chest, chin, nose, forehead), the more respect. Forehead is reserved for monks and royalty.
