Some pagoda thresholds are raised. Step over them — never on them. It's a respect convention from imperial times.
Same rule at traditional homes. The threshold (ngạch cửa) symbolizes the boundary between worlds; stepping on it is bad form.
If in doubt, watch what locals do at the entrance and copy them.
