Take your shoes off at the genkan

Every traditional home, ryokan, temple interior, and many restaurants have a step-up area called genkan. Shoes off, slippers on.

Slippers are provided. Never wear them onto tatami mats — switch to socks or bare feet.

Toilets have their own dedicated slippers. Step in, swap, then SWAP BACK when you leave. Wearing toilet slippers into the main area is an iconic foreigner mistake.
