Bread goes on the tablecloth

At French restaurants, your bread roll is placed directly on the table or tablecloth, not on a plate. This is correct, not gross.

There's a small bread plate at high-end restaurants, but at bistros and brasseries, the table IS the bread plate.

Never cut bread with a knife — tear it with your hands. And use it to wipe sauce from your plate (saucer) — that's a compliment to the chef.
