Don't tip — anywhere

Tipping confuses or even offends in Japan. Service is included in the price. Leaving change on the table is a faux pas.

If you really want to express thanks, a small wrapped gift or a sincere verbal 'arigatou gozaimashita' works better than cash.

The only exception: some tour guides accept tips in a sealed envelope (called pochi-bukuro).
